Autism Spectrum Disorder Evaluations

offered by Megan E. Crisler, PhD

Dr. Crisler provides full Autism Spectrum Disorder Evaluations, including the use of the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, both
identified as part of the gold-standard approach to ASD assessment and common in most hospital-based diagnostic centers.

ASD diagnoses are often difficult, particularly as many individuals with ASD present with various symptoms that are not always clear.  For example, many individuals appear to have symptoms of ADHD or ODD, but much of the behavior is attributable to neurological features of ASD.  Thus, a detailed assessment of all symptoms is necessary, going beyond a basic evaluation of cognitive functioning and use of symptom checklists.

Evaluation Process:

Children and adults are evaluated for cognitive and social development, supplemented by a detailed parent interview, questionnaires, and review of medical records, such as documents from speech and occupational therapy.  For children, such evaluations are usually fun and heavily toy-based.  Most evaluations take at least a half day, and sometimes extend to two days depending on symptoms.

A standard ASD evaluation typically entails:

  • Parent Interview
  • Intellectual Assessment
  • Achievement Testing
  • Neuropsychological Testing (if needed)
  • ADOS-2
  • ADI-R
  • Parent Questionnaires
  • Review of Medical Records

Following an evaluation, a detailed test-results session is scheduled to review diagnosis, discuss recommendations, and answer any questions.  Recommendations following evaluation may include a variety of therapies, many of which are offered by Dr. Crisler (e.g., developmental play therapy, social skills groups, etc.).  While ABA is not offered explicitly by Dr. Crisler, aspects of ABA are integrated across many of the approaches.

Note that insurance companies do not always cover ASD evaluations and, as a result, self-pay and payment plan options are available to cover the cost of assessment, if needed.
